How To Buy Happiness
In this Ted Talk, Micheal Norton elaborates on the topic of how to buy ones happiness. Does money really buy happiness? This question has been posed in society for many years and many philosophies have tried to explain the true answer to this question. His speech conveys the theory that giving away to others brings a person more happiness then selfishly keeping ones money to them self. In the novel The Great Gatsby, no one truly portrayed this theme of giving to others instead of keeping to themselves. Many characters in the book had lavish lives and riches which they spent among themselves but could careless about the poverty in the world like The Valley of Ashes. Gatsby was a huge character in the novel and made a name for himself from the huge amount of wealth he bestowed. He searched for happiness in all the wrong places, throwing extravagant parties every weekend just to get the attention of a lover from five years earlier. Gatsby never had friends until he gained the company of Nick Carraway, and with all the money Gatsby possessed it never seemed to be enough to give him the happiness he sought after. In this novel, the only thing that could bring happiness to Gatsby would be getting the love of his life Daisy back, not giving back money to make oneself happier. Money did not buy the happiness of Gatsby even after all the company he kept every weekend. Money still had no match over the relationship he longed for with Daisy Buchanan. So, does money really buy you happiness?
